Due to the continued presence of Direct Edge and BATS, some say traders' worries about rising trading costs may be premature. These operators would help to keep pricing "honest" if the combination of Nasdaq and NYSE were to happen, said Bernie McDevitt, vice president of institutional trading at Cheevers & Co.
If the number of exchanges were to shrink, it could also present an opening for a new player to establish itself.
